Developments in Constitutional Courts
- On October 23, 2024, India’s Supreme Court stated that stubble burning is not merely an issue of breach of law but it constitutes violation of citizens’ fundamental right to live in a pollution-free environment, guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution The Supreme Court urged authorities to address deteriorating air quality in the north of the country.
- U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon in Pittsburgh said in a brief docket entry on Tuesday October 22, that a 1937 U.S. Supreme Court ruling, opens new tab upholding the National Labor Relations Act, which had been adopted two years earlier was still good law, contrary to arguments by PG Publishing, the owner of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
In the News
- On October 24, 2024, The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo organized the international conference of the second annual meeting of the Balkan Constitutional Courts Forum, on the theme: “The evolution of contemporary constitutional justice – the example of the Balkan region”.
- On October 24, 2024 the Mozambique’s ruling party, Frelimo, won the elections and retained power. It is extending its five-decade rule in the country as the opposition accused it of fraud.
- Moldova’s pro-European president said on Thursday that mass bribery had affected a presidential election and a referendum on joining the European Union, but vowed to press on with a Nov. 3 runoff vote to win a second term, instead of ordering a new election.
- Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has announced plans to establish a commission to explore revisions to the country’s constitution, potentially removing term limits and paving the way for his pursuit of a third term. Opposition political leaders in Congo see Tshisekedi’s move as a strategy to prolong his tenure and make criticism.
- Texas’s Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton sued Democratic U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration, saying the federal government was not providing the help it needed in assessing the citizenship status of some of its registered voters.
- Botswana holds a national election on Oct. 30, with President Mokgweetsi Masisi favorite to win a second term against three challengers in a nation his Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has governed since independence from Britain in 1966. The Three Challengers are Duma Boko, Dumelang Saleshando, Mephato Reatile.

Calls for Papers and Announcements
- The Cambridge Legal theory discussion group (CLTDG) warmly invited scholars to attend the book launch of Valentin Jeutner’s new book “the Reasonable Person: A Legal Biography”. It will be held Monday the 28th of October from 4pm in a hybrid format. To get the link for the meeting, subscribe to the mailing list.
- The University of Messina organizes the first edition of the “Giornate italo-francesi di giustizia costituzionale”. This day will be held on November 08, 2024. The theme is “il ruolo delle Corti costituzionali e la protezione delle generazioni future » : the role of the Constitutional court and the protection of future generation.
- The Cambridge Legal theory discussion group (CLTDG) currently accepts submissions for presentations for the upcoming Lent (2025) and Easter (2025) terms. The subject area encompasses legal, moral and political philosophy. Applications from graduate students and junior academics in any area of law and philosophy, as well as researchers from different countries are accepted. The deadlines for application are as follows: 04 January 2025 for the Lent (2025) term, and 4 April 2025 for the coming Easter (2025) Term.
- McGill University’s Faculty of Law and the Peter MacKell Chair in Federalism are proud to announce that the Baxter Family Competition on Federalism has returned for a fifth edition. Participants are invited to submit an original essay related to the fifth edition’s overall theme, Federalism: thinking outside the Box, by February 7th, 2025.
- The Global South Network (GSN) is honored to have President of the UK Supreme Court/the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, Robert Reed, Lord Reed of Allermuir as a guest speaker during the GSN judges guest lecture series. Lord Reed will deliver the hybrid (face-to-face/online) public lecture titled ” North and South: Judicial Cooperation Between the United Kingdom and the Global South” on 20 January 2025.
