The Widener University School of Law will host a Global Environmental Constitutionalism Symposium on Friday, April 11, 2014. The focus of the symposium is a critical examination of whether and the extent to which to embed constitutional provisions protecting substantive or procedural rights to a quality environment in national and/or subnational instruments. It is hosted by the Widener Law Review and co-sponsored by the Environmental Law Center at Widener University.
The Widener Law Review will publish conference proceedings in an upcoming issue dedicated to the emerging subject of global environmental constitutionalism. Travel and lodging expenses for panelists will be covered. Additionally, a dinner for those involved will be held the evening prior to the event.
PURPOSE: Most people live under constitutions that protect environmental rights in some way. The constitutions of more than 165 of the 193 UN-recognized nations on the planet address environmental matters in some fashion, some by committing to environmental stewardship, others by recognizing a basic right to a quality environment and still others by ensuring a degree of public participation in environmental decision making. Because of the worldwide interest in the subject, Widener Law Review’s corresponding symposium edition would reach a global audience, appealing to those interested in variegated legal subjects and pursuits, including human rights, constitutional, environmental, international and comparative law.
DETAILS: The symposium will be a daylong event with approximately five or six panels, 12-15 speakers, and a keynote. The symposium will produce six to eight novel and contemporary pieces of legal scholarship for publication in a dedicated issue of the Widener Law Review.
CALL FOR PAPERS AND PARTICIPANTS: We encourage submission of original papers addressing novel topics from all disciplines, including from academics, jurists, practitioners, authors, and policymakers worldwide. For those interested in presenting, please submit an abstract of the proposed presentation by December 13, 2013. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis until all spots are filled. We are open to presentation by Skype or other similar electronic fora, although in-person presentations are preferred. For those interested in contributing a piece of legal scholarship, please submit an abstract or draft of the article by December 13, 2013. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis until the Widener Law Review symposium issue is full.
Faculty, researchers and practitioners from all disciplines are encouraged to submit their research and join the symposium.
Finally, we welcome everyone to attend the conference whether or not you are a program participant. All participants need not produce a piece of substantial legal scholarship.
PAPER SUBMISSION PROCEDURE: Please submit a no more than 500 word abstract of the proposed presentation or piece of legal scholarship electronically by December 13, 2013 in PDF or Windows version to: Nicolle M. Vasconez, Editor-in-Chief, Widener University School of Law, nmvasconez@mail.widener.edu. The Law Review will extend invitations to present and/or publish by January 28, 2014. Manuscript drafts of papers would be due by March 15, 2014, to allow preview and comments by conference participants. Final manuscripts would be due by May 31, 2014. It is requested that papers not exceed a total of 8,500 words (inclusive, approximately 30 double-spaced pages in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins).
